Ghisoni makes winning start for Godolphin

A race debut two years in the making came with one anxious moment before royally bred filly Ghisoni started her career in winning form at Warwick Farm.

The most spruiked horse going into the midweek meeting on Wednesday, Ghisoni lived up to expectations - and her bloodlines - to win the TAB Rewards Maiden Plate.

But she gave her supporters a scare when she momentarily resented jockey James McDonald pulling his whip through to his left-hand side and giving her a reminder to keep a focus on the task of winning.

Ghisoni responded, but it was in a way she wasn't supposed to as the three-year-old swished her tail and McDonald didn't force the issue anymore with the $2.35 favourite.

"She's never seen the whip before," trainer John O'Shea revealed.

"I'm sure she'll be right. For two years with her it's been cuddle, cuddle, cuddle."

McDonald nursed Ghisoni to the line and the filly had 1-3/4 lengths in hand over Involving ($10) who just held off Crystal Flute ($5) for the second placing.

Ghisoni is the third foal out of 2008 Golden Slipper placegetter Portillo, yet despite her pedigree O'Shea said she was never going to make it as a two-year-old.

"She is a very tall filly and it took a while for her to grow into herself," O'Shea said.

"Ultimately I think she is going to be a miler more than a sprinter.

"It is a nice day out for her today. She has got a lot of improvement obviously when she learns her trade."

Part of the learning process could entail a stint at Godolphin's Victorian stable.

"We need to get some runs on the board now before we give her a let-up and let her come back in the autumn and see what she can do," O'Shea said.

"And that might even mean we give her a little trip to Melbourne to give her some experience."
