Missrock to bounce back to form at Sandown

A solid gallop by Missrock at Sandown during the week has convinced her trainer Robbie Laing the filly can bounce back to winning form when she returns to the track.

Last month at Caulfield, Missrock produced an impressive performance to win the Listed Debutant Stakes at her first start before running third at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.

The two-year-old heads to Sandown on Saturday as the $3.20 favourite in the Listed Santa's Magical Kingdom Stakes (1000m).

The trainer admits to being disappointed with her defeat at Flemington where he thinks the result was tempo-related and he holds high hopes the filly will rebound on Saturday.

"There will be speed on down the hill," Laing said.

"She'll get back a bit but the long run in, being her third run, and with that gallop on Tuesday, I expect her to win.

"There's plenty of good trainers there and plenty of well-bred horses and they might be out of the box, but they'll need to be to beat her if she's on song."

Missrock was a chance yearling buy for Laing at the Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast.

He skipped over the filly on the pedigree page thinking she would be too expensive for his budget.

He then spotted a likely type, believing it to be a colt because of its size, only to realise it was the filly.

Laing entered the sales ring to see how much she would bring, thinking she would fetch a $1 million, and was surprised when bidding stopped at $450,000.

"I put my hand up for 475,000," he said.

"The auctioneer asked if that was a bid and the good news for me at that point was she was passed in."

That allowed Laing to get clients on board, have her x-rays examined and then negotiate a sale that closed at $500,000.
