Damian Lane with Group One chances in WA

Wednesday 18 November 2015, 4:44pm

West Australian Damian Lane returns to Perth racing for the first time this season with Group One success in his sights.

Lane is from Bunbury and began his career in the west but the jockey has been based in Melbourne since 2011 and had a stint in Hong Kong earlier this year.

The talented hoop has snared a Group One win in Melbourne and has been close to a few more in Victoria but will be lining up in his first Group One races in his home state on Saturday.

"It's the biggest day on the WA racing calendar so it's good to go back and have a few good chances as well," Lane said.

He partners Fast `n' Rocking in the $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and last Saturday's RJ Peters Stakes winner Hazzabeel in the $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m).

Fast `n' Rocking is one of two eastern states visitors in the Winterbottom along with 2013 winner Buffering who has barrier 10.

They occupy the top two lines of betting with Queensland sprinter Buffering $3.80 while Fast `n' Rocking has barrier three and is at $4.60.

"Fast `n' Rocking is a class horse and he's drawn beautifully to get a cosy run off the speed," Lane said.

"He's going to need a bit of luck as he always does, but if he does he's going to be awfully hard to beat."

Lane picked up the ride on the Dan Morton-trained Hazzabeel and will have to overcome the second outside gate in the field of 15.

"He's an on-speed runner and that's why barrier fourteen makes it tricky," he said.

"It just depends on how much he's going to have to work from that barrier."

Lane's book of rides also includes He's Our Rokkii, the second favourite in the Group Two WA Guineas as well as two horses trained by his father Michael.
