Chris Waller once admitted to having a poster of Jim Cassidy on the wall of his childhood bedroom.
But he won't be hanging a photo of the horse which wins the Chris Waller Racing Farewells Jim Cassidy Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday.
Sydney's premier trainer will have up to 14 runners at his home track, but none in the race he is sponsoring as a tribute to the jockey who retired during the Melbourne Cup carnival.
"I was going to tell them there was a $5000 cash trophy to the winning trainer until I found out I wouldn't have a runner," Waller quipped.
Without a vested interest in the result, Waller might well take a moment to watch the race with Cassidy, who will be at Rosehill as a guest of the Australian Turf Club which has dedicated the afternoon to celebrating his colourful career.
Cassidy won a handful of majors for Waller including a Sydney Cup on Grand Marshal, Queensland Derby on Hawkspur and the Golden Rose-Coolmore Stud Stakes double aboard Zoustar.
"It's quite sad he's retired but I've got to respect that he's said he's ready and that's it," Waller said.
"It's the end of a very, very successful career that fortunately we've been part of in the latter years."
Waller said Cassidy's Golden Rose win on Zoustar stood out because it typified the man.
"He had a wide draw and sat three-wide but he didn't panic, he let the horse travel comfortably," Waller said.
"He won with a bit of arrogance in true Jimmy style."
Waller's Rosehill runners include three-year-old Feast For Eyes in the Might And Power Handicap.
The colt has won two of his 10 starts, both times ridden by the man known as The Pumper.
"He's a good example of Jim Cassidy getting a horse into form," Waller said.
"It would be fitting if he won."
