Jockey Tim Bell, who died in an accident earlier this month, has been remembered as an exceptional talent whose lively personality left an indelible impression on everyone he met.
Bell was buried in his hometown of Narrabri in north western NSW on Monday while about 500 people gathered at Doomben for a memorial service on Thursday.
The 22-year-old rider died when he fell from a building in Singapore on Melbourne Cup day.
Brisbane Race Club's racing manager Bart Sinclair said Bell was a natural horseman, even in the early days when he rode a stubborn mare named Mary at pony events.
"Tim was taken far too early but during his short life he was lucky to have such a loving family, partner (Heidi Whalley), friends and masters in Sue Grills and Kelly Schweida," Sinclair said.
Top jockey Damian Browne related a story about being suspended several times for "knocking down" the young rider in races when when Bell first came to Brisbane.
"I couldn't work out why he never blew up. He would just give me that cheeky smile," Browne said.
"But then I would look in the paper the next day and see he had picked up half my rides.
"He'll never ride against us again but he will always ride with us."
Schweida recalled a time when Bell was apprenticed to him and insisted on working a slow horse each morning.
The trainer later discovered it wasn't the horse but the strapper, Heidi, that had attracted Bell's interest.
Bell's father Grant told how Tim survived a major health scare as a baby before growing up to love horses, rugby league, swimming, and water skiing.
"I want to thank the Brisbane racing fraternity for taking Tim to their heart. They made him what he was," Grant Bell said.
Bell's memory will live on in the Brisbane jockeys's room where a photograph of him winning the Queensland Oaks will be placed.
