Gai Waterhouse's assistant trainer Mark Newnham has been honoured for his contribution to the Australian racing industry at the Godolphin Stable and Stud Awards.
Newnham was presented with the Australian Thoroughbred Excellence Award in a ceremony at Randwick on Tuesday.
The prize includes $5000 for himself with another $4000 awarded to Gai Waterhouse Racing.
In his acceptance speech, Newnham acknowledged his family for giving him the space to pursue his career.
"It is a really challenging industry for your lifestyle," he said.
"Especially in the last four years, there is never any down time."
A former jockey, Newnham acknowledged his long association with Waterhouse.
"The support and encouragement she gave me over the years, I thank her for that," he said.
Newnham was chosen from a group of five prize winners in different award categories who were honoured for their behind-the-scenes contribution to racing.
In the first year of Godolphin's Stud and Stable Staff Awards, there were more than 170 nominations for prizes in six categories: leadership, horsemanship, dedication to racing, breeding, administration and thoroughbred care and welfare.
