Regan Bayliss got his moment to shine at Warwick Farm on Wednesday with two winners but his day wasn't without drama.
The apprentice notched a double aboard the Chris Waller-trained Francais and Rule The River for Anthony Cummings, earning high praise from the latter's son and stable foreman Edward Cummings.
"Regan did a fantastic job," Edward Cummings said after the Tab.com.au Handicap.
"He's obviously going to be a rider of the future so we're trying to give him as many opportunities as we can."
Waller also commended Bayliss' effort on Francais in the All Too Hard @ Vinery Handicap, a race restricted to apprentice jockeys.
The leading trainer said his wife Stephanie was also elated because she has a share in the winner.
But not everyone was happy with Bayliss.
James Innes Junior, who rode second placegetter Circular, fired in a protest against Bayliss on Francais for causing interference over the final 100m and knocking the whip out of his hand 20m from the finish line.
Innes argued the incident prevented him from winning the race on the Godolphin filly.
"Regan Bayliss' filly got the margin on our filly at a vital stage where our filly was starting to warm up," Godolphin assistant trainer Darren Beadman told the stewards.
Waller was quick to respond.
"For a jockey to lose a whip over the last 20 metres doesn't have any relevance to the finish of a race," Waller said.
The protest was dismissed.
