Williams bitten by Highway Handicap Bug

If anyone deserves a change of luck it is Danny Williams.

At the start of the year the Goulburn trainer had his pelvis sheared in half by a bucking horse and spent almost two months in hospital.

Just last month he was kicked in the face by another horse and had stitches sewn into the inside of his mouth.

"I'm thinking of getting some bubble wrap," Williams said.

If that wasn't bad enough, Williams has also been out of luck in the Highway Handicaps, a popular addition to Sydney's Saturday race programs catering exclusively for country-trained horses.

Despite making the weekly trip up the Hume Highway since the initiative began, Williams is yet to have any joy.

"I haven't won one of these races yet and I've been represented in every one of them so far so hopefully we can turn it around," Williams said.

He will get two chances to do that at Randwick on Saturday when he saddles up the promising Shutter Bug and La Bella Rouge in the Highway Handicap.

Shutter Bug was scratched from a race at Canterbury on Wednesday due to a wide draw, and the expanses of Randwick also appealed as a plus for the big-striding mare.

"The emphasis was the bigger track, that swayed us to go to Randwick, albeit I don't think she's an 1100-metre horse. I think she's crying out for further," Williams said.

Shutter Bug was narrowly beaten when she resumed in a Rosehill maiden in September so Williams took her back to the bush to get a win on the board.

It didn't come as easily as he had hoped.

"We sent her to Wagga thinking she'd just win comfortably," Williams said.

"But she raced forward and that almost brought her undone, she only just won."

He decided on another start in the country at Goulburn and Shutter Bug delivered with her second win despite covering ground and over-racing.

The effort earned her another trip to town and she is a $6.50 chance for Saturday's race.

Finishing fourth to her at Goulburn was La Bella Rouge who made late headway after missing the start.

A $26 chance, Williams expects La Bella Rouge to be competitive from an inside draw.

"Her work has been excellent," he said.

"There's a fair bit of weight difference between my two and she has a good barrier."
