Classy filly Candika showed she had two vital assets needed to be competitive in next month's Magic Millions 2YO Classic with her win at Doomben on Saturday.
Candika ($4.80) sat behind the pace and the took a needle-eye opening in the straight to beat the favourite Royal Tithe ($2.40) by a short neck in the Gallopers QTIS Handicap (1110m).
At her only other start, Candika got back in the field before finishing strongly to win at Doomben on October 31.
Trainer Steve O'Dea said Candika had learned a lot from her first-up effort and was now a more complete filly.
"She was able to jump today and then showed courage to go through a gap in the straight. They are strengths you need in a race like the Magic Millions."
"You usually have to be handy and then sometimes it is a real arm wrestle which goes to a tough competitor," he said.
O'Dea said Candika, who is raced by a Proven Thoroughbreds syndicate, would go straight into the Magic Millions Classic on January 9.
He is likely to have two runners as he also plans to start The Last Kiss who was well beaten at Doomben last week.
However, The Last Kiss was caught in the worst part of a wet track last week and O'Dea said she had done well since the run.
