Jockey Jim Byrne has set himself the task of emulating rugby league great Wally Lewis to snatch the inaugural State of Origin jockeys series for Queensland.
After three rounds Queensland is last in the series and Byrne will need to finish in the top two in the remaining two heats at the Gold Coast on Saturday to have any chance of winning.
Lewis, generally regarded as the greatest Origin player of all time, was at Doomben on Wednesday to make a presentation to retiring race caller Alan Thomas.
"Wally is the perfect inspiration as he never gave up in any game and especially Origin matches," Byrne said.
It has been a frustrating series for Byrne who missed last Saturday's meeting through suspension.
Queensland went into that meeting as joint leaders but came out in last place when both Glen Boss's mounts were scratched.
Points going into the last day are NSW 22, New Zealand 14, Victoria 12 and Queensland 11.
Tye Angland will represent NSW, Damian Browne will be New Zealand's jockey and Victoria's current leading metropolitan jockey Dwayne Dunn will carry that state's colours.
