James Orman started the year as a promising apprentice but will end it as one of the most dominant jockeys in Australia after his double at Ipswich on Wednesday.
Orman's wins on Doula ($4.80) and Hardify ($5.50) mean he will head into the final race meeting of the year at Toowoomba on Thursday night as Queensland's leading jockey on 68 wins.
He is leading the senior Brisbane senior jockeys premiership on 37.
Orman is third on the national premiership behind West Australia's William Pike and Victoria's Dean Yendall and also third on the national metropolitan premiership behind Pike and Sydney's James McDonald.
Interestingly, Orman has teamed with about 150 trainers during the year but has never ridden for the state's dominant trainer Tony Gollan and had only two rides for the Robert Heathcote stable.
The Gatton-based Orman has ridden all over the state and estimates he has seen about 40 Queensland racetracks.
"It has been a good year but the key is to keep things going," Orman said.
Tegan Harrison, who starts a suspension on Wednesday night, ended her year on a high when Shades of Pearl ($8) won the maiden (1350m) at Ipswich.
It was Harrison's 51st overall winner for the season and her 29th in metropolitan racing.
"Shades of Pearl jumped a lot better today and she was able to lead easily," she said.
