A last-ditch attempt to get Shotover River into the Magic Millions Trophy failed but it has prepared him for his Sunshine Coast assignment.
One of the most consistent horses in Queensland, steps up from 1600 to 2200 metres in the Butler McDermott Open on Saturday.
The gelding won three middle distance race in a row before a spell and since returning has raced well in stakes races.
Shotover River was second in the Listed Recognition Stakes and third in the Listed Brisbane Hcp before running seventh in the Bernborough Stakes on December 19.
Dan Meagher, a member of the Meagher Training Team, said Shotover River's Bernborough run was much better than it looked.
"He really was looking for a middle distance by the time the Bernborough came around," Meagher said.
"But it was a wild card race for the Magic Millions day.
"Shotover River isn't a Millions horse but had he won he would have got into the Magic Millions Trophy.
"Our other option was the Summer Cup in Sydney that day but we figured he might as well have a go at getting into a million dollar race."
He said while the plan didn't come off, the race had got Shotover River ready for Saturday.
"Eventually we will have to look at making some lightning trips to Sydney," Meagher said.
"But there are 2200 metre races every second week here and they seem to keep the weights down, so you can win a few."
The Meaghers recently bought Shotover River's half brother at a New Zealand ready to run sale.
"He arrived in the stables on Wednesday and looks a nice type," Meagher said.
