A treble at Moonee Valley has boosted Jye McNeil's ambition to outride his apprentice claim in the coming months.
His three winners on Saturday moved him to within 17 city wins of the 80 required to outride his allowance.
"I've got until the 31st of May to do it," McNeil said.
"I'll give it a good go. That's the goal I've set, to outride my claim.
"Obviously over summer is when we get a good go as apprentices so hopefully I can get plenty of rides and give it the best shot I can."
McNeil's first win on Saturday came aboard the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Siegestor,'
He brought up No.2 on the Chris Calthorpe-trained Young Nicola and capped his day with victory on Alice Springs sprinter Sirbible in the final race on the card.
It took his total of city winners in Melbourne so far this season to 12 with more than half coming at Moonee Valley.
"I thought my rides were OK but I didn't think I'd go home with three winners," McNeil said.
"I always seem to have a bit of luck at Moonee Valley.
"I've had a few winners there over the last six weeks and it's good to get three more."
While McNeil is striving to outride his allowance in the next five months, Katelyn Mallyon achieved the feat last week and her apprenticeship ends next Sunday.
Mallyon joined Michelle Payne as the only women to outride their claims in Melbourne.
The Moonee Valley meeting on Saturday was Jackie Beriman's final meeting as an apprentice and she is now a senior rider.
