Kievann aiming for third win of campaign

Tuesday 5 January 2016, 5:27pm

A less than ideal barrier draw prompted trainer Stephen Brown to change plans with sprinter Kievann who will instead chase his third win of the campaign at Caulfield.

Kievann was entered to run last Saturday at Moonee Valley with a big weight won by Sirbible but Brown decided against starting him from barrier 16.

Instead Kievann will line up on Saturday with Katelyn Mallyon to ride.

"Hopefully he draws a better barrier for Saturday," Brown said.

"He's in really good form."

Five-year-old Kievann returned from a three-run Northern Territory campaign earlier this year and began his latest preparation with a Moonee Valley victory under lights in November.

The gelding then was beaten less than a length by Written Up at the same track and returned to winning ways in Adelaide last start.

Ridden by Jamie Kah, Kievann proved too slick for his rivals at Morphettville Parks, leading all the way to score by 2-1/4 lengths.

"When he went to Darwin he sort of struggled a little bit but we still managed to win a race with him up there, and since he's come back he's really done well," Brown said.

Brown believes 1200m is Kievann's pet distance and the trainer said he would see how he performs on Saturday before deciding where to head next.

"But it looks like he might have a good race in him, anyway," he said.

Kievann has 57kg in the race which has attracted 14 nominations with Mighty Like topweight with 60kg.

The Leon and Troy Corstens-trained General Groove has 59.5kg and is coming off a last-start fifth in the Listed Christmas Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day.
