River's Lane heading on Adelaide Cup path

Friday 8 January 2016, 4:13pm

River's Lane holds fond memories for Adelaide trainer Ryan Balfour.

The rising 10-year-old is one of the last horses in Balfour's care which he trained in partnership with father his David before his death in 2014.

"He's the last one left of that ilk," Balfour said.

"He's a very special horse so it would be nice if can pick up another win or two."

River's Lane heads to Caulfield on Saturday to contest a heat of the Swettenham Stud Summer Championship.

The gelding won three races for the father-and-son team after they joined forces in 2013.

And he won again for Balfour with a Flemington victory last January, the veteran's most recent success.

The gelding heads to Caulfield on Saturday for a third start at the track.

He finished just over a length behind So You Think in the 2009 Caulfield Guineas.

Despite his advancing years, Balfour is keen to try River's Lane as a stayer and will give the gelding a campaign aimed at March's Adelaide Cup.

As part of that plan earmuffs have been added to River's Lane's gear.

"We're trying to get him to settle more," Balfour said.

"As he gets older we just want to explore whether he can get out to a distance so we're going to go down the road of the lead-ups to the Adelaide Cup and see if we can get him to the Cup."

River's Lane was also an acceptor for a 2500m race at Morphettville on Saturday, but Balfour felt he wasn't ready for the trip.

"Originally he was meant to have a run two weeks before his last start over 2000 metres and then back up into the 2500 metres this weekend in Adelaide," Balfour said.

"But he missed that run because the meeting was called off due to the heat.

"So I just had to change my plans as I wasn't confident of him running 2500 metres just yet."
