Sadler victory soured by 16-meeting ban

Saturday 9 January 2016, 6:05pm

Tom Sadler's first city winner in five months has come at a cost with the apprentice suspended for 16 meetings at Caulfield.

Sadler was charged with careless riding for his actions in the early stages of Saturday's Jack Dunn Handicap aboard eventual winner Golden Spin when the apprentice shifted in, resulting in four horses being severely hampered.

Stewards told Sadler they had considered a reckless riding charge but acknowledged the apprentice did attempt to straighten his mount.

Sadler only returned to race riding last month after serving a four-month ban for testing positive to cocaine.

Only days after returning to riding the apprentice spent another week and a half on the sidelines recuperating from a race fall at Moonee Valley on December 18.

Sadler pleaded guilty to careless riding.

"There's no doubt I'm very well aware of where I was wrong," Sadler told stewards.

"The carelessness was a rapid shift in the first part of the interference, and it was quick.

"I feel I did try to correct, even though the damage had already been done."

Sadler said Golden Spin was slow to react to his direction after an initial shift.

He said he would consider whether to appeal the severity of the ban.

The Lee and Anthony Freedman Golden Spin brought up his fourth win in a row and third of the campaign with his front-running performance.

The colt, sent out the $3.10 favourite, won by three lengths.

A step up to stakes company could be on the horizon with the Manfred Stakes next month an option.

"He's a ripper," Sadler said.

"He tries very hard and makes his own luck."

Ben Melham was also suspended at Caulfield for careless riding aboard Yellen in the straight in the Chris Boothroyd Handicap (1600m).

After pleading guilty, Melham was outed for nine meetings.
