Balfour eyeing G1 sprint with Cashed

Sunday 10 January 2016, 3:09pm

Adelaide trainer Ryan Balfour has no hesitation travelling to Melbourne when he has the right horse.

Stable favourite River's Lane finish third at Caulfield on Saturday and Balfour is hoping to have sprinter Cashed chasing a Group One next month.

Balfour is looking at the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 27 with Cashed who chased Alpha Miss home in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes over the same course and distance during the spring.

In running second, Cashed finished three-quarters of a length in front of the third placegetter, 2013-14 Australian Horse of the Year, Lankan Rupee.

Balfour said the four-year-old was back in work preparing for a return to racing with the trainer about to get a bit more serious with the gelding.

"We're just assessing whether we'll take him over for one of the big autumn sprints like the Oakleigh Plate," Balfour said.

"He ran second in the Schillaci at weight-for-age around Caulfield and if he comes up well enough and is ready for the race then he should get in a lot kinder at the weights.

"If he's not ready then we could stay home and look to the Goodwood and the lead-up races to that race."

The Goodwood is Adelaide's major sprint, run at Morphettville in May.

Cashed won twice at home at Morphettville in the spring before tackling four races in Melbourne.

As well as his second to Alpha Miss, Cashed finished third to Tuscan Sling and fourth to Reldas at Moonee Valley before ending his campaign with seventh in a Listed race won by The Quarterback on November 5 at Flemington.
