Distance test for Dances On Stars

While he is excited about the future with the Magic Millions sale topper, Gerald Ryan's immediate focus is on an established stable stalwart.

Like the $1.6 million yearling Ryan will train for Damion Flower, Dances On Stars is a son of Snitzel.

Bought for $95,000 at the 2011 New Zealand Premier sale, the six-year-old has earned almost six times that and will be out to add Saturday's Listed Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington to his record.

Although Dances On Stars has yet to win beyond 1350 metres, he has performed well over the 1400m of the Chester Manifold and has been trained accordingly.

"He ran second to Sizzling in the Sires Produce in Brisbane over 1400 metres as a two-year-old," Ryan said.

"And he was second again to Sizzling in the Queensland Guineas over the distance as a three-year-old.

"He's getting older now and I've been training him a bit differently and changed a few things around, .

"Now is as good a time to try him again over the distance and Damien Oliver will ride him."

At his most recent start, Dances On Stars finished second to Cradle Me in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on Boxing Day.

"The three weeks between runs will suit him," Ryan said.

Dances On Stars showed his talent as a two-year-old when he won the Group Three Kindergarten Stakes before coming up against Sizzling three times in a winter campaign.

While Ryan is happy to travel horses to Melbourne, he says he is now unlikely to open a satellite stable there.

"It is something I thought about but I don't think it will happen," he said.

"We've got the stables at Rosehill and Hawkesbury to look after."
