Sprint star Temple Of Boom runs last race

Tuesday 12 January 2016, 5:19pm

Group One winner Temple Of Boom will be given his chance to star in another equine sport after being retired on Tuesday.

Trainer Tony Gollan elected to retire Temple of Boom after he ran a game fourth in the Magic Millions Sprint at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

It was the sprinter's 64th start in a career that reaped 11 wins and $1.96 million in prize money.

"The Temple of old would have picked up that field and carried them. He tried his heart out like he always does but in the end it just wasn't there any more," Gollan said.

"He was great two days after the race and the dapples were still out. But there comes a time when you have to retire all horses and this is it."

He said Temple of Boom had headed off to Eureka Stud, where he was foaled, for rest and relaxation.

"Then we will bring him back and he can go out to Samford where Jane (Gollan's wife) will use him for eventing," Gollan said.

"I am sure he will like it and who knows he might turn out a star at that as well."

Gollan said it was a sad day because Temple Of Boom and his half-brother Spirit Of Boom had been the basis for his emergence as a Group One-winning trainer.

Spirit Of Boom was retired last year after winning the Group One Doomben 10,000 and has since served a season at stud.

Temple Of Boom gave Gollan his first Group One win in the 2012 Galaxy Stakes and his other major wins included the Group Two Gilgai Stakes, Group Two Victory Stakes, Group Three Aurie's Star Handicap and the Magic Millions Sprint.
