The Umbrella Man impresses at Ipswich

Wednesday 3 February 2016, 5:17pm

Promising three-year-old The Umbrella Man has revived memories of one of Queensland's best sprinters with his impressive maiden win at Ipswich.

The gelding races in the colours of the Greenup family who also owned popular Queensland champion Chief de Beers and stakes winner Ready To Rip.

The Umbrella Man ($2.40) beat Rum `n' Song ($2.30) by 1-1/4 lengths with another 6-1/2 lengths to Shadow Magic ($11) in Wednesday's Schweppes Maiden Plate (1350m).

The gelding has a long way to go to get anywhere near Chief de Beers who won 20 races including two Doomben 10,000s in the mid to late 1990s.

However, trainer Tony Gollan has a big opinion of The Umbrella Man who he believes will reach his full potential over more ground.

"We put him in a stakes race at his second start as a two-year-old," Gollan said.

"That's how much we felt about his potential. He is still a long way off that but I think he will win his share of good races."

Winning jockey Jim Byrne agreed and said he thought The Umbrella Man would be better as the distances got longer.

Caloundra trainer Stuart Kendrick continued his good run at the meeting for north Queensland owner-breeder Dalan Tamblyn and his family when Jack Lancaster ($5) won the Sky Racing 3YO (1200m).

The Kendrick-Tamblyn combination has had many city winners in recent years including Passatorio, Tambo's Jewel, Queen Caesar and Lightfeet Lady.

"I enjoy winning races for the Tamblyns because they stuck with me when I moved down here from the north," Kendrick said.
