Twist Tops turns in winning performance

Saturday 6 February 2016, 4:33pm

A filly passed in at the Inglis Classic sale has come out on top in the $250,000 race restricted to yearlings from the 2015 catalogue.

Twist Tops gave Newcastle trainer Kris Lees his second win in the 1200m race at Randwick on Saturday, 10 years after Absolutelyfabulous won.

Absolutelyfabulous went on to run at the highest level and retired with earnings of more than $800,000.

Lees is not sure how Twist Tops can measure up, especially against the better juveniles of her year but he will give her a chance.

"This has been her target race but we might try her in one of the fillies races coming up," Lees said.

"I don't know where she sits with the other two-year-olds but I do know she is a tough little filly.

"It was a testing track and she had a run under her belt and a bit more experience than some of the others.

"She was passed in at the sale and a group got together to buy her."

In a market cramped at the top, Twist Tops and Soviet Secret were at $4.60 second equal favourites behind Wonderful Story at $4.40.

Wonderful Story raced just behind Twist Tops but the debutant had no answer to the filly who beat Soviet Secret by a neck.

Can't Find Snippy ($101) was the same margin third with Wonderful Story seventh.

Twist Tops has had four starts with a minor glitch in her career when she was found to have an irregular heart beat when unplaced in a race at Moonee Valley in October.

"She had a good foundation and she got over the heart arrhythmia with no problems," Lees said.

"I think she can go on and be a nice three-year-old."
