Shakespearean Lass has brought up a family double at Caulfield with a black-type win in the Listed WJ Adams Stakes.

The four-year-old mare's hard-fought victory in Saturday's 1000m sprint came 30 minutes after her older half-brother Dan Zephyr landed his second-straight city win in the John Moule Handicap.

Both horses are prepared by Group One-winning trainer Pat Carey who wasn't on track because he was in Sydney for the Inglis Classic yearling sale.

"He's having a look at a few horses there," Carey's wife Cheryl said.

"I'm disappointed he's not here because he works really hard and is so hands-on with all his horses. He does a great job, everyone knows that."

Shakespearean Lass won at Flemington and Sandown during December in benchmark races for fillies and mares before finishing fourth to Runsati at Moonee Valley last month.

She turned the tables on Saturday in her first stakes test, with Runsati finishing fifth after sitting on speed.

Shakespearean Lass ($17) tracked the leaders Diamond Oasis and Runsati before making her move from the top of the straight.

She held off the finish of Trevinder to win by a half-head with 1-1/4 lengths back to Grane in third.

Jockey Rhys McLeod, who has had a long association with the Carey stable including winning an Australian Derby on Ethiopia and a Queensland Oaks on Gondokoro, said it was great for Shakespearean Lass to get a black type success.

"We ended up having a lovely run," McLeod said.

"We peeled off their backs at the top of the straight and she was too strong hitting the line."

Dan Zephyr ($6.50) sat second before taking over at the top of the straight and got home by a half neck to bring up a milestone for apprentice Michael Dee.

It was Dee's 50th metropolitan win and it reduces his city claim from 2kg to 1.5kg.
