Jason Warren considers options for Puritan

Saturday 6 February 2016, 6:12pm

Jason Warren is looking at Group One options for his impressive first-up Caulfield winner Puritan.

But whether Saturday's Group Three Manfred Stakes winner is stepped up in distance for the Australian Guineas or kept to sprinting for a tilt at the Newmarket Handicap is still to be decided.

"We're going to aim pretty high, we've just got to work which direction we go," Warren said.

"We'll let today soak in, enjoy that and have a think about it."

Ridden by Nick Hall, Puritan ($21) charged home to score a half-head win from the $2.60 favourite with Ready For Victory ($9) a length away third.

Warren has been on the search for his next good horse following the retirement of Group One winner Bel Sprinter.

"I was blessed to get a horse like Bel Sprinter, as frustrating as he was, but he was a big help to my career," Warren said.

"I owned a decent chunk of him and that helped buy Dennison Park.

"Without him the job would be a lot harder but I think I've found another.

"This horse has always given us a really big vibe. There's been something about him."

Warren thinks Puritan may be best kept to the shorter trips in the immediate future, suggesting the length of his stride and the way he covers the ground as impressive attributes.

And he said he had finally been able to train Puritan for a race after the son of Beneteau underwent a crash course to improve his barrier manners.
