Two-year-old filly Tale Of Choice caught Gerald Ryan off guard despite trainer's confidence about her winning chances at Warwick Farm.
Tale Of Choice showed the benefit of a start before Christmas and the application of blinkers to lead throughout in the TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap (1000m) on Wednesday.
"I trialled her in blinkers and she went really good so I jumped her out in blinkers a week ago and she went terrific so I decided to leave them on," Ryan said.
"It wasn't unexpected. What I didn't think would happen today is she would have that speed because she's never shown that before."
Tommy Berry nursed Tale Of Choice ($9.50) into the straight and the filly kicked strongly to beat equal favourite Rather Sweet ($3.40) by 1-3/4 lengths.
Tale Of Choice's first start came against much better two-year-olds when midfield at Rosehill on December 19.
And Ryan suspects a midweek win won't be the last for Tale Of Choice, a filly by Redoute's Choice out of a Tale Of The Cat mare.
"She's improved, she's growing and she's got a bit of scope to her," he said.
