Weight-for-age
HISTORY:
* Usually an autumn starting starting point for some of the best WFA horses in the country.
* First run in 1925 at Williamstown over 1600 metres and won by The Night Patrol.
* Group Two until 1993.
* Held at Caulfield since 1997 when Saintly won.
NOTABLE WINNERS:
* Heroic (1927), Gothic (1929), High Caste (1940), Flight (1946), Rising Fast (1956), Lord (1959-60), Tobin Bronze(1967), Leilani (1975), Surround (1977), Hyperno (1978), Manikato (1979-80-81), Vo Rogue (1988-89-90), Let's Elope (1992), Jeune (1995), Saintly (1997), Lonhro (2004), El Segundo (2007), Typhoon Tracy (2010-11) and Black Caviar (2012), Dissident (2014)
TALKING POINTS:
* Mares have a good record, winning three of the last six editions, as do favourites with the past six successful. The last non-favourite to win was Maldivian ($7) in 2009.
* The past 10 winners have either been first or second-up in their preparations. If there is a lead-up race to watch it is the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley, won by Holler this year.
* The race is typically dominated by on-pace runners - only Shinzig and El Segundo have come from off the pace in past 10 years.
WHAT THE KEY PLAYERS ARE SAYING:
"So much for getting in early and hoping for an easy race. I'd hoped we would be able to avoid the good horses" - Rebel Dane's trainer Gary Portelli.
"I am walking away from the exercise happy and looking forward to Saturday" - trainer Peter Gelagotis after Mourinho's trial at Cranbourne on Monday.
"We'll have to sit down with Steve and work out a plan. We don't want to be having a gut buster sitting out three and four wide" - co-trainer Troy Corstens after Awesome Rock drew barrier 17 in the 18 horse field for Stephen Baster.
