Lee Freedman is looking interState with Malaguerra after the sprinter's impressive first-up victory at Flemington.
Malaguerra will firstly head to Sydney before venturing further north to Brisbane for the winter carnival after his win in the Bob Hoysted Handicap on Saturday.
Ridden by Ben Melham, Malaguerra was supported from $5 into $4.60 equal favouritism before scoring a 1-3/4 length victory over Grane ($41) with Thermal Current ($13) a head away third.
Freedman said he had picked out the Darby Munro Stakes at Rosehill on March 19 as a suitable target in Sydney for Malaguerra, but long-term would like to target the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.
Since being gelded at the start of his last preparation, Malaguerra has notched five wins from six starts and continues to impress Freedman.
And while he is still down in the handicaps, a race like the Stradbroke looks suitable.
"He wouldn't be in that sort of a field yet but if he can do a little bit more and get in just over the minimum weight, he might be a dangerous horse," Freedman said.
"Improving sprinters down in the weights often win that race and he's certainly made big inroads since he was gelded."
