Pengelly to base himself on Sunshine Coast

Sunday 6 March 2016, 2:17pm

Jockey Brad Pengelly has moved his base from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast in an effort to convert his recent good form into more rides.

Pengelly was seen at his best again on Saturday when he won the Open Handicap on Pillar Of Creation at Doomben.

The jockey says his move to the Sunshine Coast is designed to increase his base of trainers.

"I will still ride work in Brisbane on Tuesdays to keep faith with those who have supported me there," Pengelly said.

"But I like the Sunshine Coast life style and I am good mates with (jockey) Damian Browne.

"We go to the gym together and walk together. It is easier when you have some one to work with."

Browne has been able to manage his weight and rides since basing himself at the Sunshine Coast and Pengelly hopes he can do the same.

Weight has been Pengelly's biggest problem throughout his career and prompted him to retire in March 2012.

Three years later he returned and this time around his fitness regime is working.

"I have no problems riding at 56 kilograms. It is just when I have to get down lower than it is a bit harder," Pengelly said.

New Zealand apprentice Chris Dell has also moved, transferring his indentures to David Murphy at Eagle Farm.

Dell has ridden about 100 winners and has a 3kg claim.

"I like Brisbane and the racing here so hopefully I can start to get plenty of rides," he said.

He finished third in his first Brisbane race aboard the Les Ross-trained Mishani Stealth on Saturday.
