Six weeks ago Southern Legend was still a maiden. On Golden Slipper Saturday at Rosehill, he won his third consecutive race, the $125,000 ATC Sebring Darby Munro S. 1200m LR.
That rapid ascension to stakes-winning status signals a seriously progressive horse. As his jockey Tim Clark said, "He's got a will to win. That was a big step up today and he handled it well.”
Bred & sold by Corumbene Stud, Southern Legend is the third foal of Donna's Appeal (by Carnegie), a city-winning daughter of 2YO stakeswinner Donna Natalia, from the family of Group 1 winner & Group 1 sire Charge Forward.
Purchased for $280,000 by Neville Begg & Carmel Size from the 2014 Inglis Easter Sale, the 3YO gelding is owned by K. K. Ho and prepared at Randwick by veteran trainer Les Bridge, who indicated his latest star would now head to the spelling paddock.
Corumbene has retained Southern Legend's two younger siblings, 2YO gelding Treviso (by Snitzel) and a yearling filly named Maxima (by Choisir). Donna's Appeal is in foal to Not A Single Doubt, who has now left two stakeswinners to mares by Sadler's Wells sons, and South African Group winner Castlethorpe to a Sadler's Wells mare.
Southern Legend is Not A Single Doubt's 33rd stakeswinner, and his 10th this season. In fact, the son of Redoute's Choice has posted six winners of seven Group & Listed Races since 1 February: G1 & G3 winner Extreme Choice, G3 winners Don't Doubt Mamma & Single Gaze and Listed winners Let It Slip, Selenia and now Southern Legend.
Street Cry and Written Tycoon have knocked him off the top spot on the General & 2YO Sires' tables, but Not A Single Doubt is still the leading sire of 3YOs by earnings ($2,960,353), winners (39), wins (57), stakeswinners (5) & stakes wins (7).
