Ben Currie keen to explore expansion plans

Ben Currie is weighing up stable options as he prepares two of his best horses for a return to racing at Doomben.

Currie will have promising two-year-old filly Love Spy and consistent gelding Honey Toast run on Saturday.

The young trainer has been one of the success stories of Queensland racing and since preparing stakes winner Rothera as a 19-year-old has won two Toowoomba premierships.

Now 25, Currie is keen to increase his presence in metropolitan racing and applied for boxes at the new-look Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

"Unfortunately, I wasn't given any. I like Toowoomba but to expand I really have to move. I don't want to be in Toowoomba for the next five to 10 years," he said.

"Maybe, I could apply for somewhere like Singapore. I want to get experience while I am on the way up. It is something I have to have a good think about."

Love Spy and Honey Toast have been solid racehorses for Currie.

Unbeaten in two starts, Love Spy is likely to have only a short winter campaign before being put away for the Melbourne spring.

"She only had two weeks in the paddock after winning at the Sunshine Coast. She is fit and ready to go," Currie said.

"At this stage she will run in the Dalrello Stakes at Toowoomba (on April 16) and then probably miss the rest of the winter."

Currie considered sending Honey Toast south for the Adelaide Cup earlier this month but decided instead to remain at home with the Toowoomba Cup in mind.

"I would love to win the Toowoomba Cup being a Toowoomba boy. We felt we would have only one throw at the stumps and if things went wrong travelling to Adelaide it would be a waste," he said.

Honey Toast, who will also be ridden by Byrne, will run on Saturday and then head straight into the Toowoomba Cup on April 16.

"He is a horse who can mix his distances and the 1600m on Saturday should be ideal," he added.
