Caulfield Cup start on the line

Thursday 31 March 2016, 6:41am

Tom Melbourne will be out to book a place in the Caulfield Cup when he lines up at Mornington.

The last-start Albury Cup winner is the pronounced favourite for Saturday's $300,000 Mornington Cup.

Victory in the 2400m-race guarantees the winner a start in this year's Caulfield Cup in October.

Trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, the former European has won four of his six Australian starts including his past three.

Although showing his inexperience with clockwise racing in the Albury Cup on March 18, he still ran out a decisive winner.

He heads Mornington Cup betting at $2.30 ahead of the Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned Observational at $6.50.

Observational is backing up from his third behind Leebaz in the Easter Cup at Caulfield last Saturday.

The Darren Weir-trained Puccini and first emergency Pemberley share the third line at $8 ahead of Big Memory at $9.
