Racing Victoria Limited Owner’s Information Day Caulfield Racecourse
The Owners Information Day held at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday was the best of its kind I have attended. There was a steady flow of people interested in getting into horse ownership. Syndication Companies such as ours have a very important job to do in introducing new owners to the industry. It is vitally important that these owners get the opportunity to see their horse get to the races.
I have heard too many bad stories about new owners feeling as though they were let down with the ‘champion’ they had purchased delivering nothing more than frustration and vet bills. We work very hard to try and purchase horses that can do the job for us and while we don’t get it right every time our overall performance is without peer in our industry.
The figures tabled below which include our three, four and five year old syndications should beg the question ‘Why would you look anywhere else for a share in a horse?’
3 TO 5 YEAR OLD CROPS
Crop 2012 – Now 5 years old
Total purchased - 14 Raced - 14 Winners - 13 Non winners - 1
Crop 2013 – Now 4 years old
Total purchased - 13 Raced – 13 Winners -13 Non winners – Nil
Crop 2014 – Now 3 years old
Total purchased - 14 Raced – 11 Winners – 8 Non winners – 3
Still to race – 3
SUMMARY
Total purchased - 41 Raced – 38 (92%) Winners – 34 (82%)
Non-winners – 4 Still to race – 3
(These figures don’t include two yearlings from the 4 year old crop which died before we could do anything with them)
The 2013 crop represents an outstanding group of horses with all 13 getting to the races and all being winners. This crop includes some outstanding gallopers with Savoureux, Hijack Hussy, Husson Eagle, Raido, Annaman, Bella Venus, Hazy Blur, Stimuli, Invincible Me and Makeadane still part of our team (9 of these are metropolitan winners or better).
These 13 horses cost $633,500 (Ave $48,730) have won 39 Races and $2,037,058 in stakes money!!!
ON THE TRACK
We have a very busy week ahead with Husson Eagle and Invincible Al running in Stakes races at Caulfield and Flemington. As well as these important runners we have Hijack Hussy running at Flemington on Monday and Shining Brooke, Brooklyn Lass, Hazy Blur and Go Arrivederci nominated for races.
We also have several horses competing in barrier trials.
The number of runners we are likely to have in the coming weeks should continue to be strong with us likely to have good representation at the Scone Cup Carnival, Adelaide Carnival and into the Queensland Winter Carnival.
TONY MCEVOY
Tony McEvoy has decided to close his NSW operation which comprised a training complex at Hawkesbury and stable block at Randwick. The horses I have with Tony in NSW will be divided between John Thompson and Kris Lees.
I intend continuing to support Tony in future and understand the pressures involved with trying to run a business in three states. It is very difficult and you need to have the right staff involved. Tony’s results have been very good since he went out on his own and I wish him and his team continued success.
I will probably purchase Tony a yearling at next year’s January Magic Millions Sale. His Angaston / Flemington mix is a good one and while I have no interest in having horses trained to race in South Australia I am happy to have the ‘right’ trainer at Flemington and Tony certainly fits that profile.
This gives us trainers at Randwick, Flemington, Eagle Farm, Caulfield, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Plumpton, Hobart and Newcastle which is a good mix and allows us to move horses to where they are best suited.
THERE ARE SOME NICE YEARLINGS ON OFFER AT PRIME THOROUGHBREDS
Featured this week is a filly by Hussonet out of Miss Piggy Bank
10 shares @ $7,500 each (5% shares @ $3,750)
The filly
This is a very attractive filly. He is well grown, has a deep girth, beautiful head and great hindquarter. The moment I inspected her in Adelaide I was certain I would purchase her provided she vetted out without any issues. This was the case and a vet report is enclosed in this package.
I have had wonderful success with Hussonet’s daughters. In all I have syndicated three with all getting to the races. Hijack Hussy was a stakes winner at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day and Huiskes was a two year old stakes winner. Hussy’s Glow was stakes placed recently in the TTC Gold Sovereign stakes. In total Hussonet has had 1011 foals to race with 96 stakes winners (9.5%) and a further 79 stakes placed (7.8%). For us to purchase three fillies with 2 stakes winners (66%) and a further stakes placed is a remarkable effort.
Hussonet (USA)
Hussonet (USA) is one of the very best sires to have stood in Australia in the past decade with his progeny including the outstanding Weekend Hussler, Husson, Wild Spirit, Host, Eagle Falls, Gold Trail and Reaan being some of his 30 Group 1 winners. In total he has had 96 stakes winners including our very good fillies Hijack Hussy and Huiskes. I was also the under bidder on the Stakes winning Hussonet filly Member’s Joy.
It is important to plan ahead. Hussonet’s daughters are now well sought after broodmares with good results being achieved crossing them with the many sons and grandsons of Danehill we have standing at stud in Australia. Hussonet and his sons are also working in reverse with Danehill line mares. Hijack Hussy is the result of this potent cross.
Hopefully this filly can follow the racetrack success of Hijack Hussy, Huiskes and Hussy’s Glow and secure a future for herself at stud after her racing career is completed. Hussonet has jumped from 173rd to 20th in only his 3rd season on the broodmare list in Australia. The best known of the runners out of his daughters is the Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice. Hussonet came to Australia as a relatively old horse from a stud perspective but has had a remarkable impact here.
Miss Piggy Bank
Miss Piggy Bank is by the successful sire Secret Savings and was a nice race mare winning twice and being stakes placed. She comes from a very successful family with the first four dams producing 21 to race for 17 individual winners. I love buying out of families where there is a Champion mare on the page. This is the case here with the 4th dam Par Excellance being the top filly on the 1979 Canadian 2YO Free Handicap.
Miss Piggy Bank has had one to foal to race with it winning 11 races.
