Cahill, Ford pick up important Bris rides

Tuesday 26 April 2016, 1:24pm

Top Queensland jockey Michael Cahill will ride late-entry Artlee in the Victory Stakes at Doomben.

And connections of Fell Swoop, the favourite to win the Group Two sprint, have also confirmed their horse would be ridden by Jay Ford after original jockey Damien oliver was suspended.

There were originally only six horses in the $200,000 Victory Stakes on Saturday but the Brisbane Race Club extended nominations.

It is expected the four late nominations - Artlee, Charlie Boy, Rock Royalty and Pinch River - would accept as well as the original six nominations.

Artlee was ridden by Mitchell Bell at his last start when he finished ninth of 10 runners behind Stradbroke second favourite Music Magnate in the Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick.

Bell and rival jockey Hugh Bowman engaged a bumping and jostling contest in the straight and trainer Todd Willan felt Artlee should have finished much closer.

Connections decided they wanted a Brisbane jockey for Artlee's Queensland campaign and they booked Cahill on Tuesday morning.

"I haven't had a chance to look at the race replay but I am told Artlee didn't have much luck last start. He looks a nice ride on Saturday," Cahill said.

"I look like having a handy book including Cylinder Beach who makes his comeback in the Gunsynd Plate."

The Matt Dale-trained Fell Swoop was ridden by Hong Kong-based Zac Purton when second to Chautauqua in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes at his last start.

Oliver was to ride Fell Swoop on Saturday but was suspended at Flemington on Monday.

Fell Swoop will be a short-priced favourite in the Victory Stakes, one of only three weight-for-age sprint races run in Brisbane.
