Hipparchus has confirmed his liking for an occasion, winning the Provincial Stayers' Championship Final at Hawkesbury.
"He's doesn't show a lot on the training track or in his trials but come raceday when the pressure is on he knows what to do," trainer Chris Waller said.
Taking his Australian record to two wins from three starts, Hipparchus ($3.10) came away to fight the race out with the favourite Duca Valentinois ($2.50) and stablemate Loving Home ($8) before winning by a neck.
Duca Valentinois denied Waller a quinella, leaving Loving Home to take the minor placing in a race Waller has used a springboard for some of his better overseas stayers.
The most notable example is Grand Marshal, the 2014 winner who went on to capture last year's Sydney Cup.
There are no such ambitious plans in Hipparchus' immediate future, but Waller is sure the Hawkesbury win on Saturday won't be the four-year-old's last.
"I think there is plenty of upside and the further the better for him," Waller said.
Two-year-old Swear gave Spendthrift Farm a second Australian winner inside a week with a last-to-first victory in the Claret Stakes.
One of the biggest thoroughbred operations in the United States, Spendthrift Farm has gradually increased its Australian presence over the past two years.
Sent out a $12 chance in a $125,000 race where Godolphin had numbers on its side with three runners, Swear ran on widest to beat Flow ($5.50) and the favourite Radcliffe ($3.50).
The same stable, jockey and sire combination that was successful with Redouble at Canterbury on Wednesday teamed up with Swear.
The Redoute's Choice colt cost $725,000 as a yearling and was ridden with confidence by Christian Reith for Hawkes Racing.
Spendthrift Farm has set up a stud in Victoria and has been active during Australia's round of yearling sales in the hope their colts turn out to be good enough to have a future in the breeding industry.
