Miss Cover Girl ready to hit the headlines

Friday 6 May 2016, 11:42am

A couple of gear changes and a good barrier could be the catalyst for Miss Cover Girl to record her first win for a year.

The mare has drawn barrier two in Saturday's Listed Silk Stocking Hcp (1200m) at the Gold Coast which will be her first start since her fifth to Amicus in the Group Two Breeders' Classic at Randwick in February.

Her trainer Kelly Schweida said that effort was better than it looked on paper and she will wear blinkers and a tongue tie on Saturday.

"She had no luck in the Classic and finished less than two lengths from the winner," Schweida said.

"At her start before that in Sydney she was third in a three-way photo in the Nivison Stakes and at her only other run there she won the P J Bell Stakes.

"In other words she has been right there with the better southern mares."

The P J Bell in April last year was the mare's most recent win but her record of three wins around the tricky Gold Coast circuit is in her favour.

"And at last we have got a good barrier which means we can ride her closer and with cover," Schweida said.

Schweida is also hoping for a big run from two-year-old Oink in the Group Three Ken Russell Memorial Stakes (1200m).

"He was a good winner at Doomben two runs back but he was still green when third at the Sunshine Coast last time," he said.

"If he continues on we will give him his chance at the BRC Sires and possibly J J Atkins."

Oink is raced by a syndicate which includes family and friends of the late jockey Tim Bell and he races in a special set of colours which include a bell.
