Derby shake-up as The Gurkha wins G1

Monday 16 May 2016, 8:42am

The Gurkha has been slashed in markets for the Epsom Derby following his impressive win in the French 2000 Guineas, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Deauville.

The winner of a Navan maiden just four weeks earlier, the Galileo colt continued his dramatic progression by dominating his opposition on Sunday.

Ryan Moore made his move with two furlongs (400m) to run and The Gurkha raced to a 5-1/2 length win over First Selection.

Ladbrokes reacted by making him the 3-1 favourite for the Derby but trainer Aidan O'Brien has not committed him to a Derby start.

"We're delighted with him, obviously," O'Brien said.

"He has three options now - the St James's Palace, the French Derby and the Epsom Derby.

"We'll let the dust settle for a week or 10 days and then we'll see."
