Black Denim became our 3rd individual winner for her new trainer Michael Costa when she broke her maiden in good fashion in the SPRING HILL MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES) at Kembla Grange on Saturday.
Ridden perfectly by apprentice Ms Kayla Nisbet, Black Denim settled nicely in the box seat before a gap presented itself in the straight. She kept grinding away and was too strong over the concluding stages, edging clear to win by 1.3 lengths.
“I thought Kayla rode her a treat,” trainer Michael Costa commented.
“They really hummed along quicker than I would have liked, but she (Nisbet) let her travel beautifully and it was really gutsy for Black Denim to get down and grind over the 1000m seeing as she is probably only three quarters fit still.”
“I am really proud of her and expect her to improve a lot from that run.” said Costa.
Previously Black Denim had finished a long last on debut and 8th in her second start but a combination of giving her more time to mature along with the extra care and attention Michael Costa has given her, has clearly brought the best out of her.
All credit goes to Michael Costa and his team who had a career best day on Saturday with 3 winners from 3 runners, highlighted by the very exciting filly Manaya who won the 2yo Listed PRYDE'S EASIFEED WOODLANDS STAKES (1100 METRES) at Scone.
Congratulations to all of the connections in Black Denim and in all of Michael Costa’s winners on Saturday.
