Turnitaround chasing third-straight win

Friday 20 May 2016, 3:31pm

His name is Turnitaround, but trainer Matthew Williams doesn't want the horse's form to change.

"Unless he's going better again," Williams said.

Turnitaround has been in top form so far this preparation having won his past two starts and is among the leading chances in Saturday's Might And Power Handicap at Flemington.

The five-year-old by Hard Spun resumed with a placing at Geelong in April before winning over 1700m at Flemington on Anzac Day and then claiming the $40,000 City Of Warrnambool Handicap (1700m) on his home track for the second straight year on May 3.

"Last preparation he just didn't come up," Williams said, adding the gelding had a virus earlier that campaign which may have took its toll.

"We were happy enough with his first run last campaign but his next few were below par so we put him out and he's come back this time and had a faultless prep.

"He's flying at the moment."

Turnitaround surprised Williams with his Flemington win second-up before taking fitness improvement and winning again at Warrnambool.

Williams believes Turnitaround is ready for the step up to 2000m.

"He's only had one gallop between the Warrnambool race and Saturday but he does quite a bit of work at the sand dunes and a lot of work at the beach," he said.

"He's rock-hard fit. He's been running it right out to the line (over 1700m) so I don't think 2000 will be a problem."

The Warrnambool trainer expects Turnitaround to sit outside the leader or close to the speed with his light weight under apprentice Ben Thompson.

"And if he gets going a bit early he's going to be hard for them to catch," he said.
