Turnitaround off for well-earned break

Sunday 19 June 2016, 2:40pm

Turnitaround's winning run may have come to an end at Moonee Valley but trainer Matthew Williams hasn't lost faith in the gelding.

Turnitaround strung together four wins on the trot before finishing last as the well-backed favourite in Saturday's Vital Healthcare Property Trust Handicap over 2040m.

The gelding had a tough run when trapped three-wide for most of the race, eventually finishing eight lengths behind the second last horse in the race won by Longeron.

Williams said he had always planned to send Turnitaround for a spell after Saturday's race with a step up to Group races in the spring in his mind.

He said the gelding would have a month in the paddock before returning to work at his Warrnambool stable.

"We'll probably look to something first-up over a mile," Williams said.

"We were thinking about the David Jones Cup at Caulfield as a target race but that might come around a bit too soon.

"We'll probably set him for the Seymour Cup, then go to an 1800-metre Listed race on Melbourne Cup day.

"There might even be a race for him on Sandown Classic day.

"With his rating where it is now they're the sorts of races that we'll have to target with him."

Turnitaround showed his versatility on soft and firm ground with two victories at Flemington along with wins at Warrnambool and Sandown during his four-win sequence.
