Price's Noble Joey wins despite immaturity

Saturday 25 June 2016, 12:23pm

Noble Joey is still not quite sure he is a racehorse, but his record shows he is definitely one.

The three-year-old scored his fifth win at his 10th start when he led all the way for Kathy O'Hara as a $10 chance to beat some more fancied opposition in the Can Assist Cancer Support Handicap.

Trained on NSW South Coast by Robert Price, Noble Joey held off Static Lift ($4.20) by three-quarters of a length with favourite Yuma Desert ($3.50) another long head third.

"He was bred in the back yard of a bloke's place and only six months ago realised he was a horse," Price said.

"I gave him a spell and put him in a paddock with other horses but he still stood away from the herd.

"He is a bit of a thinker and does things his way.

"Kathy rode him perfectly. He's a one-trick pony and you can't hold him up."

O'Hara said Noble Joey could only continue to improve.

"I gave him a dig at the top of the straight and he kicked for me but he's still got a lot to learn," she said.

"Robert has done a great job with him so far and he will be a whole lot better as he goes on."
