Rare Occurrence to back up at Sunny Coast

Tuesday 28 June 2016, 10:48am

Trainer Stuart Kendrick will monitor Rare Occurrence before deciding if the two-year-old filly can cope with racing twice in a week.

Second in the Singapore Airlines 2YO Plate at Eagle Farm, Rare Occurrence is among 23 entries for Saturday's Bruce McLachlan Memorial Classic (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast.

Kendrick said Rare Occurrence had suffered a few minor setbacks since coming into work for the winter carnival.

"It has taken two runs to get back near her best but she worked so well on Tuesday I gave her a great chance in the race at Eagle Farm on Saturday," Kendrick said.

"She ran up to that work when second and I think she would have won had she drawn a decent barrier. We were forced to go back through the field and then run home wide."

Kendrick said as long as Rare Occurence did well she would back up on Saturday on her home track.

"Most of the good horses have gone home or are spelling so she should be suited. And she has backed up in a week before," Kendrick said.

The McLachlan is one of the most sought-after races for Sunshine Coast trainers as it is named after the late Caloundra-based trainer Bruce McLachlan who died seven years ago this month.

Kendrick also has Top Peak entered for the race and another 10 horses nominated for the feature meeting.

Among them are Patronizing, Promiscuous and She's Worthy in the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) and Typing in the Caloundra Cup (2400m).
