Self Sense back in town after injury

Friday 1 July 2016, 3:29pm

David Brideoake has had the best season of his training career, thanks to the deeds of the recently retired Group One winner Griante.

And Brideoake hopes Self Sense can add another satisfying moment when he heads to Caulfield on Saturday after two pleasing runs since returning from a tendon injury.

Like Group One Galaxy winner Griante, Self Sense was bred by Brideoake and the trainer said seeing those types of horses make their mark on the racetrack was rewarding.

"I've had the best year of my career. We won a Group One with Griante," Brideoake said.

"She was bred and reared and broken in and trained by us. That's a real important part of the satisfaction I get from racing.

"Once you've had a mare and you know the scope or quality of a mare, I really enjoy going on and putting their progeny into the stable.

"And we have loyal stable clients who continue to race these horses."

Thames Court, a Group Three winner during the autumn, is another home-bred for Brideoake.

Thames Court's dam is Pantenny who Brideoake trained while five-year-old gelding Self Sense is out of the Brideoake-trained Be My Person.

Self Sense won the 2015 Listed Kilmore Cup and was placed in the Randwick City Stakes and Albury Cup.

He spent 11 months off the scene undergoing a rehabilitation program for a tendon injury before making his comeback in late May.

"We rehabbed him ourselves at Mornington and he's come through well," Brideoake said.

"We just took it step by step but he's a very good horse to train. He's a big powerful horse, and the rehab work was pretty easy to achieve with him because of his temperament."

Self Sense was beaten less than a length when second in the Echuca Cup (1400m) first-up before an even closer second in the Swan Hill Cup (1600m).

"We're quite upbeat about the way the horse is going," Brideoake said.

Brideoake believes 2000m is ideal for Self Sense on Saturday.

The trainer also has Sprung Dancing heading to town for the Catanach's Jewellers Handicap (1200m) after the two-year-old broke her maiden at Geelong last start.
