Mahuta was one of many Darren Weir success stories this season and the leading trainer is looking to the Memsie Stakes as an early opportunity for Group 1 glory.
The rising four-year-old's spring campaign was stepped up this week with Weir taking the Magic Millions Guineas winner to Donald for an 800m jumpout on Tuesday.
Weir has nominated the Bletchingly Stakes, run at Caulfield on July 30, as his first-up target.
The Group 1 Memsie Stakes is a weight-for-age 1400m race at Caulfield on August 27.
"He is heading towards the Bletchingly, followed by the PB Lawrence and the main goal is the Memsie, which is the first Group 1 of the season," Weir said.
"Things can change and if he isn't going well enough we can deviate but at this stage that is our plan."
Mahuta won six consecutive races earlier this season, starting with a maiden victory at Kyneton in October followed by the Gothic Stakes, Carbine Club Stakes, Sandown Guineas, Magic Millions Guineas and Autumn Stakes.
He was turned out after finishing down the track in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and has appreciated his winter break according to Weir.
"He seems to be really good, he hasn't got too heavy but he is a very big, strong horse, he is sound and well and the crew at the beach are really happy with him," he said.
