Craig Williams believes Trenchant has all the qualities to be a future star with the colt showing plenty of heart to win the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final.
The John O'Shea-trained, Godolphin-owned Trenchant was sent out the well-supported $2.50 favourite in Saturday's 1600m race for two-year-olds after his convincing last-start win over 1400m at the same track.
With Williams taking over from apprentice Michael Dee aboard Trenchant for the Taj Rossi Final, the colt was three-wide early before moving into the race rounding the home turn.
Williams had to call on his mount's fighting qualities after Futura challenged but Trenchant rallied to prevail by a nose.
"He's an exciting horse," Williams said.
"It did look like this was his race after he was convincing in his lead-up race two weeks ago, but he did have to handle a pretty hefty penalty."
Trenchant carried equal topweight of 59kg.
"He felt from the 1000 metres that he was a little bit off the bridle so I had to give him a squeeze and he had an acceleration but unfortunately I used it at the top of the straight," Williams said.
"But I had a horse that was good enough to sustain it at the end.
"I feel he will definitely get further in his three-year-old year and he showed his fighting abilities today when inside the 100 metres I was basically on empty."
O'Shea's Melbourne representative David Charles said Trenchant was likely to have a short break before the stable looks at spring options.
"I think the plan will be to give him a little freshen-up for a couple of weeks and John will have a look at him and put a plan together probably in the latter part of the spring for him and we'll see where he takes us," Charles said.
"And hopefully he might be an exciting autumn horse for us."
