Craig Williams has surged to the lead in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership and admits it's the competition with Dwayne Dunn that is spurring on his late-season form.

Williams won four straight Melbourne premierships from 2005/06 to 2008/09, sharing the latter with Damien Oliver.

He was five wins behind Dunn heading into last Saturday's Flemington meeting but in the space of two meetings he has erased the deficit and taken the lead by one.

He rode five winners to Dunn's one at Flemington and added a winning double without reply at Moonee Valley on Wednesday.

The battle between the two will continue at Caulfield on Saturday, one of five city meetings remaining this season.

"The reason why I'm riding that well is because he's pushing me to go that far," Williams said.

"I love the competition and he's making me strive even harder and work harder."

Dunn, who is chasing his first Melbourne title, has eight rides at Caulfield including last-start Caulfield winners Longeron and Duke Of Brunswick, while he will also be aboard Fast `N' Rocking who is $4.60 favourite for the feature Sir John Monash Stakes.

Four of Dunn's rides are early favourites in their respective races.

Williams partners Girl Guide in the Monash with the mare sharing the second line of betting at $6.

Williams' book of eight rides also includes two last-start Caulfield winners, Hursley and Makatiti.
