Thermal Current will spearhead trainer Darren Weir's chances of another stakes win to his season to remember at Caulfield.

Weir set the Commonwealth record for winners in a season when Gun Case notched the trainer's 335th win for 2015/16 at Moonee Valley on Wednesday.

Last Saturday Weir became just the fourth trainer to have reached 100 metropolitan winners in Victoria in a season and he has five city meetings remaining to build on his tally of 102.

Among that century have been 25 stakes wins, highlighted by Prince Of Penzance's Melbourne Cup victory in November.

Weir has had 35 stakes wins nationwide during the current season.

Thermal Current won the Listed Hareeba Stakes in April at his first start for Weir after being transferred from the Peter Moody stable.

He is considered the best chance of three runners for Weir in Saturday's Group Three Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield after his last-start win in the $100,000 Golden Topaz at Swan Hill.

Weir also saddles up Olivier and Mirage.

"Thermal Current bounced back to form in the Topaz," Weir said.

"He could have run last week down the straight in the All Victorian Sprint Series Final but I reckon he's better at Caulfield."

While Thermal Current is yet to win at his former home track, he has been stakes-placed at Caulfield four times.

Weir revealed he had also considered taking Thermal Current to Grafton in NSW for Wednesday's Ramornie Handicap.

"It was just a bit of a thought, but then I decided we'll go to either the Sprint Series Final (last week) or this race," he said.

Weir said Thermal Current had done well since his Swan Hill win.

"He went to St Arnaud for a trial (on June 28) just to keep him up to the mark," he said.

"He's good. He's very hairy looking but he lives outside at home.

"It's completely different to what he would have been used to."

Thermal Current is at $14 with Olivier, a last-start runner-up in Adelaide, at $21 while Mirage is at $41.

"Olivier had every chance in Adelaide and this looks a stronger race," Weir said.

"Mirage's last two runs have been disappointing."
