Pop `N' Scotch will have the experience of Robert Thompson on his side when he makes his third attempt on Queensland's longest race.
The Liam Birchley-trained stayer Pop 'N' Scotch has run second in the past two Queensland Cups, missing last year by a nose when collared by Mister Impatience.
"He was home everywhere but the line. I didn't have him the previous year when he was a three-year-old and he was second to Iggi Pop," Birchley said.
Birchley has called on champion jockey Thompson for Saturday's Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm believing the veteran hoop will suit the gelding.
The trainer said Pop 'N' Scotch had worked solidly since his last-start failure in the Caloundra Cup.
"The Queensland Cup seems to be his race but he has been up for a long while and that is the worry," he said.
"Robert rides a bit longer than most jockeys and that will suit Pop 'N' Scotch. I have had a lot of success with Robert over the years."
Jim Byrne will have a rare ride for premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller on the $2.50 favourite Murphy's Delight.
Murphy's Delight was second to stablemate Opinion in the Randwick Stayers Cup over 3200m two runs back and is down in the weights on 55kg.
Byrne, who rode four winners at Doomben on Wednesday, won the Queensland Cup on Iggi Pop two years ago and also took it in 1998 with Insecure.
"Murphy's Delight looks a true stayer so it is a good ride," Byrne said.
Sydney trainer John Thompson, who trained Pop `N' Scotch for his first Queensland Cup, elected to miss Thursday's Grafton Cup with Jiayuguan in favour of the Brisbane race.
Thompson is keen to try the former French mare at 3200m and has booked Damian Browne for the ride.
