Feet problems plague Miss Softhands

Friday 15 July 2016, 4:29pm

Trainer Colin Little will delay a decision on whether Miss Softhands takes her place at Caulfield until race morning.

Miss Softhands is down for her first run from a spell in the Mypunter.com Handicap on Saturday.

All was looking good for Miss Softhands to take her place until she pulled off her two front shoes in a jump-out at Caulfield on Tuesday.

Miss Softhands has been plagued by feet problems in recent years.

"She almost has to have orthopaedic shoes on and she went a furlong (200m) in a trial on Tuesday and threw them off," Little said.

"A thousand dollars worth of shoes went up in the air."

Little searched the Caulfield track after the mishap but was unable to find the expensive set of plates.

He said Miss Softhands was usually shod at Werribee University but after Tuesday's mishap was reshod by his own farrier with the help of another.

He said a farrier-vet who consults to Werribee University takes x-rays of the bones in Miss Softhands feet and shoes her accordingly.

"That's where she's been the last couple of shoeings but we couldn't do that on Tuesday, so my farrier and another farrier came in and spent about three hours trying to help her," Little said.

"I'm confident they have done a really good job but it's not like they come good instantly after being shod.

"We've got to make a decision about her and she was certainly sore on Tuesday.

"She's been reshod, been off the pony for a couple of days and I'll work her in the morning and make a decision."
