A victory on the Darren Weir-trained Ulmann at Caulfield has extended Craig Williams' lead in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership on a day when his rival for the title went winless.
Williams started on Saturday one win ahead of Dwayne Dunn in the premiership and it took until the seventh race for either to get on the board, with Williams guiding the Darren Weir-trained Ulmann to a 1-3/4 length win in the the LUCRF Super Supports Jockeys Plate (1400m).
Williams angled Ulmann into the clear between runners early in the straight and the talented galloper raced clear over the final 100m to defeat Duke Of Brunswick, which was ridden by Dunn.
"He definitely owed us that one," Weir said after Williams rode Ulmann to victory.
Williams had earlier ridden the Weir-trained Bondeiger who finished a luckless fifth in a 2000m race when he was blocked for a run at a crucial stage in the straight.
"He should have just come out when he went in but he came back in and admitted it, so that's the main thing," Weir said.
"He made sure he was coming out in that one and rode it very well."
Williams said he was already looking forward to his chance to get back aboard Bondeiger in two weeks.
"I'd like to have that ride again," Williams said.
"Fortunately for me I'll get that chance in two weeks. But that was one that got away."
The former Peter Moody-trained Ulmann had form behind some top horses in his previous campaigns, including a second to Winx in the 2015 Sunshine Coast Guineas.
"I like the way that he won but his form on paper was much superior to anything else in that race," Williams said.
Ulmann was having his second start for Weir and the trainer, who notched his 103rd metropolitan winner in Victoria for the season, said the gelding races better than he worked.
"He doesn't show that form at home. He's a very casual, laid-back horse,' Weir said.
"But he produces it on race day."
