Cox Plate on agenda for Scottish

Sunday 17 July 2016, 9:28am

Godolphin's Scottish has emerged as a Cox Plate contender with victory in a Listed race at Newbury in which Caulfield Cup runner-up Trip To Paris finished third.

Scottish won Saturday's 2000m-race by 1-3/4 lengths from Berkshire with Trip To Paris another 1-1/2 lengths away at his first start since injuring a tendon in the Japan Cup late last year.

With James Doyle aboard, Scottish led all the way and kicked clear on the firm surface.

"It was a great performance from Scottish and we came to Newbury very confident. Conditions suited us in terms of ground and trip," Appleby said.

"The plan was always to potentially go down to Australia with him.

"We will see whether to give him another run beforehand but we want to go down there for the Cox Plate or possibly the Mackinnon Stakes."
