Puritan to resume in Regal Roller

Sunday 17 July 2016, 1:48pm

Puritan claimed a stakes win at the first run of his autumn campaign and trainer Jason Warren hopes history can repeat itself when he begins his spring preparation.

Warren is aiming the rising four-year-old at a new-season return in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 13, a race which is likely to shape the gelding's spring.

Puritan won the Group Three Manfred Stakes (1200m) against his own age at Caulfield first-up in February before being unplaced in the Zeditave Stakes and two stakes races in Sydney.

Despite the gelding's unplaced runs in Sydney, Warren is convinced the experience of the interstate campaign has been beneficial.

"The trip away has definitely matured him and seasoned him up. And that's what he needed," Warren said.

Puritan is entered for a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday but Warren said he would instead have a jump-out at Mornington on Wednesday.

"I'm rapt with him," Warren said.

"He'll go to Mornington on Wednesday and he'll have another jump-out at Mornington two weeks after that, then he'll resume at Caulfield in the Regal Roller."

Puritan spelled in NSW before returning to Warren's base on the Mornington Peninsula to ramp up preparations for the spring.

"I think he's the sort of horse that I'd expect to be very competitive in a Regal Roller and from there we can pick our direction, whether we go for better races or just keep him to those second and third tier sprints," Warren said.

"My gut feeling is he's a fresh short-course horse.

"Being ready at the start of the season also gives us a chance to then freshen him up and be there at the end of the spring."
